Are You Genre Bent?

Those of you who have read any of my blog posts know that I am very curious. This week, Allie's post about getting addicted to specific genre got me thinking. Like Allie, I will get stuck on a particular genre for a while. Sometimes it just takes one or two books to satisfy my itch then I'll move on. Other times I will devour everything I can get my hands on in that genre for months. I went on a naughty historical bent a few years ago that took almost an entire year to satisfy. Right now I'm on a BDSM kick.

I also love to share with other readers when I find a new to me author who I really enjoy. My latest find is Kallypso Masters Rescue Me series. And get this, the first book is FREE. Bonus! These are big stories, rich with vivid characterization. If you like your heroes dominant and your heroines to be brave risk takers, give this series a try! Right now I'm on book #3 and hoping Kallypso is writing her fingers to the bone getting book 4 ready for me. Kallypso, if you're reading this, I'm going to need to get my greedy hands on Savi and Damien soon!

Many readers also have what I like to call book crack. My personal book crack addiction is J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I have a love/hate relationship with Ms. Ward and what she does to my guys! Those are key words right there "mine." As a reader, I have taken a personal stake in what happens with these characters. There are times when Ms. Ward is particularly evil to the guys or their women and I get so angry that I am tempted to throw my precious iPad at the wall. One particular sin against the heroine Jane, I will never forgive her for. What she did to Jane, holy crap. My chest got tight, my breathing shallow, I broke out in a cold sweat and my stomach turned to rock.  For me, the stories are a roller coaster ride and any books that can elicit such strong emotion in a reader are pure gold! Each year I anxiously await the arrival of my pre-ordered copy of the new book and then tell everyone not to bother trying to communicate with me before I surface after reading the last page.

For friend and fellow Sassy Seven author Desiree Holt, her crack is anything by Diana Palmer, which I love to endlessly tease her about. The Sassy Seven did a read aloud story time session from one of Ms. Palmer's books. The very snarky Allie Standifer is our favorite reader because of the vocal inflections and words she puts emphasis on get us rolling with laughter. Add in Palmer's rather T.S.T.L. young heroines and its one heck of a good time.

What about you? I'd love to hear your own personal reading experience. Do you have a book crack addiction? Do you stay with one or two primary genres or flit about from one type of book to another without any real trend? Are there genres you don't care for? And here's an important question. If there are genres you don't read is it because of only one or two books you tried in that genre that didn't do it for you? That used to be the case for me with historicals. I just didn't care to read them and became very irritated over women toeing the line, going along with the men putting them in a neat little box and demanding they not stray from societal expectations. Then I found naughty historicals where the heroines dared to push the envelope and break out of the mold. I absolutely cannot get enough of those.

  1. I too am a book crack addict. Once I find an author, I'll read all of there books. Some of these are Sable Hunter and her Hell Yeah series. Nothing like alpha cowboys in Texas. I recently became addicted to Kallypso as well. I am waiting for the next book. I loved your series starting with Savannah's Vision. I read all the books with a few days and I'm waiting patiently for more.

    1. Series are another reading addiction of mine and I do the same thing, Kathy. I grab them all and read until I've finished them all.
Riley is not being very cooperative. I'm hoping my trip to Texas this week will help with inspiration!

  2. I have to say that my book crack addiction is Kresley Cole and her delicious Immortals After Dark. The first book in the series, A Hunger Like No Other(and Maya Banks' Colters' Woman) was one of the first books I read when I rediscovered romance novels a few years ago. I was reading mostly action thriller and Fantasy for most of my adult life and then I rediscovered romance novels thanks to Jean Johnson. I was reading her Sons of Destiny series while on vacation and stopped in a book store to buy the next one in the series but they had her books in the Romance section. And wow! Some of those books in that section sounded really good so here I am now addicted to romance novels and book conventions. As for subgenres - I like most of them with a few exceptions. I've read something in them all but some just don't appeal. Right now I'm into romantic suspense, cowboys and bdsm. Nic, aren't you glad you got to "meet" Kallypso? She writes some good book crack! Have a great time in Texas!!!

    1. I have Kresley's series. One of these days I'll get to them in my massive tbr pile! I didn't read romance for many years. Hated them leaving out the best part. Then I found erotic romance and the rest is history.

  3. I've always had periods of being genre-bent. As a young woman it started with fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, action, thrillers, and now romance (since 2009). My current sub-genre-bent is erotic m/m and m/m/f. I can't get enough of it. GA Hauser, Heidi Cullinan, Ava March, Rowan Speedwell, Joey Hill, Sophie Oak, Morgan Hawke, Madeleine Urban & Abigail Roux, the list goes on. I'm already on auto-buy with authors like JR Ward (BDB), Sherrilyn Kenyon (Dark Hunters), DB Reynolds (Vamps in America), Kresley Cole (IAD), Larissa Ione (Demonica), Lara Adrian (Midnight Breed), Lora Leigh (Breeds), Nalini Singh (Guild Hunters and Psy-Changlings), Cherise Sinclair (Masters), Olivia Cunning (Sinners), Shelly Laurenston (Pack and Pride), Maya Banks (Sweet), etc.

  4. I read just about anything. I have discovered the wonder of author blogs and that helps introduce me to new authors and genres I may not have read yet. I have read many of the authors mentioned above that your were taking notes on, and the rest are also on my massive tbr list. One of my favorite sayings is, "So much to read, so little time!" What can I say? I confess to being a bibliophile. I was thrilled with the advent of the e-book and reader. I could now take an entire series with me. And yes, I too and hooked on series. I check my favorites often, chomping at the bit for the next book. As for my particular reading crack - Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. BTW, you are on my list of favorite authors too. Thank you for making my world a more exciting place.
